Alaska is every hunter’s dream, my brother Tag and I got to live that dream firsthand. We were lucky enough to harvest Tag’s first-ever moose—a moment neither of us will forget anytime soon. But as any seasoned hunter knows, taking down a massive animal is only half the battle. Moose can weigh up to 1,200 pounds, which means the real challenge is getting all that meat out of the woods and into your truck — without breaking your back.

After a successful harvest, we found ourselves about a mile from the truck. We laid the moose out on logs and began processing, quartering it up and packing the meat into Caribou Game Bags. Tag carried the Pinnacle 2500, and I had the Scout 3800—both Rokman waterproof packs. This was the first time we pushed either pack to its weight limits, and they handled it like champs. We loaded up and started the trek out, but there was more to haul—specifically, the moose’s head, hide, and horns.

That’s when the Rokman Pack Frame really proved its worth.

We unclipped Tag’s 2500 pack from the frame and left it in the truck. Then we headed back into the woods with just the carbon fiber frame. After securing the head, hide, and antlers to the frame using the nose hole strap, we locked everything in with Rokman’s built-in load straps. No extra straps. No shifting. No flopping. Even the velvet on the antlers stayed protected.

With the frame carrying the head and hide and our packs full of meat, we hauled everything out in just three trips. When we reached the truck, we simply detached the frame from the shoulder straps—everything stayed strapped in place—and fit it right into the truck bed without disturbing a thing. Once we got back to base camp, the frame kept everything organized while we continued hunting.

Bottom line: hauling a moose out of the Alaska backcountry is no small task, but with the right gear, it’s more than doable. The Rokman packs and frame made a mile-long pack-out safe, efficient, and shockingly comfortable—even with heavy loads. After this experience, there’s no question — we’ll be using Rokman gear on every big game hunt from here on out.

Already planning the next adventure.
